How long do plastic bags take to degrade, and how can I set up an experiment?
I need to write a plan for an experiment to see the effect of temperature on the degradation of plastic carrier bags, and was wondering what sort of timescale they normally take and also how I can set up the experiment in order to have different temperatures for different bags. Also what temperatures would you suggest I do?
Even under high pressures and extreme environments, anything short of burning the plastic is going to take in excess of 500 years.
I personally would choose an atmospheric condition that was highly oxidative (as opposed to reductive), and set the tempuratures up. That way the hydrogens on the carbon chains will be more likely to leave into the atmosphere, but even then it is going to take forever.
