how can i avoid paying credit card transaction fees on international travel w/o carrying too much cash?
There are no “transaction fees” on international travel. Are you referring to the foreign exchange fees that some cards charge?
If so, the only way to avoid them is to look for a card that does not charge them. Carrying cash won’t help because that costs more. When using credit cards, you get the commercial exchange rate which is much lower than the retail rate. When exchanging cash, you get the less favorable retail rate plus you have to pay a commission.
You can avoid carrying cash by using an ATM card to withdraw money as you need it. You’ll have to pay ATM fees and, probably, the foreign exchange fee, but it’s safer than carrying large amounts of cash. You’ll get the commercial exchange rate, so it can still be cheaper than cash as long as you don’t withdraw too often and rack up a lot of ATM fees.
